Day Two Of The SANParks Inaugural Annual Vision 2040 Focuses On Specifics About The Models Of A South African Inclusive Conservation Agenda

With stakeholders supportive of Vision 2040 and its ideals, the second day of the inaugural South African National Parks (SANParks) Vision 2040 Indaba kicked off in Gqeberha today (4 September 2025) with a focus on tangibles about how to drive the rollout of inclusive conservation.

The first session of the day reflected on some of the challenges the sector has faced in the past, what opportunities exist and how to position the sector for more wide-ranging conservation. This was followed by a session showcasing achievements in fostering collaborations and sharing opportunities for funding that can be harnessed in support of Vision 2040.

Delegates then joined breakaway groups under the banners of conservation; social cohesion; inclusive economic growth; and climate resilience and sustainability to discuss diverse perspectives on actions towards inclusive conservation. The structure of these is aligned to SANParks’ strategic plan which is directing the organisation towards implementation of Vision 2040. Meaning that the Indaba itself is designed as a platform that will further enable tangible actions as outcomes of the event.

The Vision 2040 Indaba, which continues until tomorrow, has brought together key stakeholders across government, farming communities, academia, civil society, sponsors, donors, the private sector, land claimant communities, conservation partners and youth representatives. The Indaba is intended to foster meaningful dialogue and forge collaborative actions that will advance the implementation of Vision 2040 – a bold strategy that advocates for a people-centred, conservation-driven agenda that will ensure collaborative thrivability between biodiversity conservation, social justice and economic empowerment.

Additionally, an exhibition displaying offerings of 48 local SMME’s is on show as part of the Indaba, demonstrating an array of products such as elephant dung-based gin, leather goods, biltong and beauty products made of natural materials.
